No, we can not see things in total darkness, because in total darkness there is absence of light. Light is a source of photons. We see things when photons hit an object and get reflected off it, which consequently come across the path of our eyes and hence it enters it.
However, if it doesn’t the object doesn’t seem to be lit or is not seen by us.

No we cannot see anything in total darkness but after sometime you get adapted to the darkness and can see a little
