Dear Student,

● Can we use a plain mirror as a rear view mirror ?

  • No. We can't use plane mirror as rear-view mirror.
  • Drivers have to see the whole view on the backside through outside mirrors.
  • If plane mirror is used, only part of the view can be seen.
  • Therefore instead of plane mirrors, we use convex mirror for rearview.
  • Convex mirror when used as rearview mirror outside cars, it minimizes the image & fit bigger field of view in same glass area.

Thanks dear. Hope this helps you...

Answer:

No, we cannot use a plane mirror as a ‘rear view mirror’. It does not produce a diminished image.

Explanation:

A driver of a vehicle uses the rear mirror to get a wide view of the rear. This is only possible if the image of the approaching objects are diminished. A plane mirror produces a laterally inverted image of the object which is of the same ‘size as the object’. It can thus not be used as a rear view mirror as it will not be able to fit in the size of the approaching vehicles.

A convex mirror on the other hand produces a diminished, erect image of the object. The driver gets a wide view of all the vehicles approaching from the rear. Hence it is used in place of the ‘plane mirror’.
