Answer:

The common confusion here is that two very different things have the same name. O is a free oxygen atom and O2 is two oxygen atoms chemically bound to form an oxygen molecule.

There is no common analogy for C, but N2 is called nitrogen, H2 is hydrogen and Cl2 is chlorine, each having the same name as that of their constituent elements.

So, to reiterate, the difference between oxygen 0 and oxygen O2 is that the former is an oxygen atom while the latter consists of two Oxygen atoms bound together, forming a molecule also called oxygen.

Solution :

The Periodic table is all about atoms not about the molecules . When we talk about Single (0) atom  which is not stable but when we talk about O_2 then it Stable .  Such elements are also known as diatomic elements .

The Seven types of diatomic elements are given as below :

  • Hydrogen
  • Nitrogen
  • Oxygen
  • Florine
  • Chlorine
  • Iodine
  • Bromine

Moreover , if we calculate the electrons , protons and neutrons it will differ .

Number of Proton in Single Oxygen is equal to 8 as atomic number is equal to number of Proton , Electrons is equal to 8 and 8 neutron and if we calculate O_2 which is a molecule then it differ .
