A List of Good Reasons to Ban Homework from School

The debate about whether homework should be banned is a heated one.

For many teenagers, the amount of homework received can cause anxiety, tears, and unnecessary stress. By the time students reach the first few weeks of class, they are ready for their next holiday break. They are expected to attend school events, participate in sports, clubs, and more, yet they have too much work to even think about attending.

The homework assignments are so big that students often end up missing out on key extra curricular activities, or are forced to ignore their homework in exchange for participation.

Homework does reinforce certain concepts, but the amount given needs to be more limited. Students are given holiday work today wherein they have a list of things they are required to do over their holidays, their summer breaks, and everything in between.

When given a day off of school in remembrance of a historical event, teachers assign extra work because the student has an extra day. But this defeats the entire purpose of enjoying a holiday or getting a day off. Students struggle now more than ever.

It is argued that the need for homework is no longer necessary. Students can prove they have mastered their subject through in-class tests and other assignments. They work so hard in longer school days that they don’t have to complete additional work outside of the classroom.

Others argue in favour of homework and state that it offers an opportunity to reinforce the lessons that you learn in class, that it gives you additional practice, and that without you would not be able to prove that you have mastered the skills.

That being said, it is nonetheless a tool that for now, isn’t going anywhere. So if you are struggling with homework, you can turn to a professional help to make it less of a burden. You can try and work with other students in your class, dividing the homework load among you so that if, for example, you have twenty homework questions and four members of a study group, you each complete five and then exchange answers. This reduces the burden for now, and still gives you the practice that you need to complete the task at hand. You can join an existing study group or try and start on with your classmates if your homework is becoming too much to handle.
