(The Chairman of Municipal corporation of Kanpur, a farmer, an environmentalist, president of Save Ganga Projecr, and a human rights activist are holding an important meeting on the ill effects of pollution caused by tanneries in Kanpur)

The Farmer: The problem of pollution and its consequences have gone beyond the critical levels. The smoke released by the chimneys of more than 400 tanneries has polluted the air to such an extent that it is not healthy any more! The ash that falls from the chimneys on the fields around the factories has rendered the fertility of soil to lowest levels. Recurrent illnesses have compounded their miseries and burdens. I on behalf of all the farmers of the region appeal to you to take immediate action.

The Environmentalist: I completely agree with the farmer. But the damage being done to Kanpur is much more worse than presented by my respectable friend. These tanneries release at least 250 million litres of waste water into the Ganges on a daily basis. This waste water contains animal remains and chemicals, namely, arsenic, cadmium, mercury and chrome. These chemicals have resulted in drastic reduction of the fish population and are also responsible for the weeds that are choking the Ganges. Moreover the smoke arising from the factories has brought about increased levels of pollution. The air in and around Kanpur is no longer pure. I also appeal to you to look into this side of the problem.

The President of Save Ganga Project: Sir, all our efforts to save Ganga from such a large scale pollution are bearing no effects because of this massive release of effluents into the river. These tannery owners are not complying with the environment laws and directives. Please do something before it is too late!

Human Rights Activist: The future of a large number of the children of Kanpur is at stake. Thousands of them are working in the tanneries and are being exposed to serious risks. These child labourers are deprived of the basic facilities of education and they miss out on the joy of childhood. Their parents do not realize that by sending them to these factories they are ruining their future prospects. As concerned fellow human beings we have to fight for the cause of these child labourers. We have to counsel the parents and suggest an alternative solution to them. Moreover, we have to spearhead an agitation against the unscrupulous factory owners. We need your constructive support for the 'Bachpan Bachao Andolan'.

The Chairman of MCK: I am shocked to hear the facts and figures you have presented to me. If immediate corrective measures are not taken, we will have some disastrous consequences. I assure you my full support. All the culprit factory owners who are violation law, will be brought to justice.
