The Meeting Pool - A Short Story By Ruskin Bond

Description

'The Meeting Pool' is a beautiful short story written by Ruskin Bond about three friends who take a pledge to return to their favourite pool after ten years. The best part of their childhood revolves around a pool, which was discovered by Rusty (the narrator of the story) and thus came to be known as Rusty's pool. As soon as Rusty discovered the pool near the ravine, he was excited to convey the news to his two friends. The secret pool became their meeting point. They indulged in activities like fishing, swimming, wrestling and buffalo rides. The pool not only symbolized the bond of friendship between them but also became a part of their consciousness. They decide to return on a fifth of April 1964 at midday, i.e. ten years later to the pool again. Rusty keeps up his word and comes to the pool. Rusty was the only one who went to the pool on the scheduled day. He was disappointed that his friends did not keep up their promise. However, there is no bitterness or rancour as he understands that with the passage of time, their needs and priorities. To his amazement, he discovers another pool and another group of friends splashing about in it. He imagines himself and his friends in their place. The story thus conveys the message that life goes on, come what may.

Full story:

It was Somi's idea that we should meet at the pool in ten years time.

“When we are men,” he said, “we must come back to this place. Ten years from today, Rusty-at midday on the fifth of April 1964-we must return to the pool. No matter where we are, or what we are doing, or if we are married and have children, we must meet at the pool. Promise?”

“Promise,” I said.

“Promise,” said Anil.

It was a schoolboy's pledge, and made in deadly earnest. As boys, we usually mean the things we say. And so we shook hands on it, and dived back into the water. The pool had been discovered by me a few months earlier. I remember that it was going to rain... I could see the rain moving across the foothills, and I could smell it on the breeze. But instead of turning homewards, I pushed my way through the leaves and brambles that grew across the forest path. I had heard the murmur of water at the bottom of the hill, and I wanted to see the water and touch it.

Sliding down a rock-face into a small ravine, I found the stream running over a bed of shingle. Water trickled down from the hillside, from amongst ferns and grasses and wild primroses. The rocks beside the stream were smooth, and forme of them were grey and some yellow. A small waterfall came down the rocks and formed a deep, round pool of apple-green water.

When I saw the pool, I turned and ran back to town because I wanted to tell the other. Anil and Somi were my closest friends. Anil lived in a crowded lane off the Dilaram Bazaar. He was wild and a little dangerous, subject to moods and impulses, but he had a certain animal charm. Somi, on the other hand, was sensitive, gentle in his ways; but in common with Anil he had a sense of fun and an instinct for adventure, They usually chose the adventures we were to have and I would just grumble and allow myself to be involved in them. But the pool was my own discovery, and I was proud of it.

“We'll call it Rusty's pool,” said Somi. “And remember, it's a secret pool, no one else must know about it.”

I think it was the pool that brought us together more than anything else. Somi was a beautiful swimmer. He dived off rocks and went gliding about under the water like a long golden fish. Anil's legs and arms were very long, and he threshed about with much vigour but little skill. I could dive off a rock, too, but I usually landed on my stomach

THE MEETING POOL

BY RUSKIN BOND

The Meeting Pool by Ruskin Bond is considered as one of the greatest pieces for describing the ravages of time. It describes that how the requirements and necessities of an individual changes by the passage of time. It also depicts that the time is an oblivious enimity and time is tyrant.

It says that the time is omnidestructive. Time destroys everything- the relation, the friendship, the necessities, the immortality of royals ,etc.

RAVAGES OF TIME ACCORDING TO RUSKIN BOND:-

THE MEETING POOL deals with three friends. The friends were chums and played a lot in their childhood.Among them was the narrator-BUSTY. He found a pool and made his friends acquinted with the presence of the secret pool . All of them went there and played a lot. They spent time fishing, swimming and bull riding. Their childhood revolved around the pool  and they decided to meet back after 10 years on 5th april 1964.

Busty kept his promise and was present on the scheduled day. But his friend did not come. He was very disappointed and realised that everything changes with respect of time. Time destroys everything and diverts the necessities and requirements of an individual.

Busty then finds another pool and saw some children playing there. He recalls his childhood and his hear fills with sorrow and a dismal expression strikes his face. He feels isolated and feels very bad. He blames time for this. He says that the time is tyrant and because of it his friends forgot him.

THE CONCLUSION :-

TIME IS TYRANT . IT DESTROYS EVERYTHING. NOTHING CAN WITHSTAND THE WRATH OF TIME. THE RAVAGES OF TIME ARE VERY DESTRUCTIVE. IT DESTROYS ALL THE MEMORY AND CLEARS THE PRESENCE OF ALL. IT HAS THE POWER TO WASH AWAY ALL THE LOVE AND AFFECTION  AND TO MAKE AN INDIVIDUAL FORGET SOMETHING OR SOMEONE. TIME IS THE METAPHORICAL REPRESENTATION OF DESTRUCTION AND FORGETFULNESS. THE NEEDS AND WANTS ARE CHANGED BY TIME .

I hope it helps you.
