Answer:

The tribes in India form an important part of the total population. It represents an element in Indian society which is integrated with the culture mosaic of our civilisation. The tribal population of India constitutes nearly 8 percent of the total population.

There are a number of tribes in India, spread over different parts at different levels of socioeconomic development. They live all over the country from the foot hill of the Himalayas to the lands tip of Lakshadweep and from the plains of Gujarat to the hills in the North-East. According to 1991 census, the numerical strength of the scheduled tribes in India stood at 52.03 million. Bihar leads all other States as regards the tribal population. It is followed by Maharashtra and Orissa.

The term ‘tribe’ is derived from the Latin word ‘tribus’. Earlier Romans used this term to designate the divisions in society.

Tribal Development in India is a subject which is being

discussed among personnel of higher ranks, statesmen, academists

and scholars for over six decades. During this period, it has become

a subject which drew serious and widespread concern and

pronounced attention from several quarters ranging from policy

makers and development planners to academists providing material

for all of them. Since the state is becoming increasingly important

in the context of tribal development, the public policy and

administrative system relating to this field have been subjected to

serious intellectual scrutiny during all these years. Thus the tribal

development has come to occupy very important place in the

agenda of social science research in the country

Before the development of states, kingdoms, and empires, all humans were confederated into tribes. Since then, of course, things have changed. Many tribal groups banded together defined their own boundaries, and formed into states and nations.

My first thought as to why this sort of thing happened was that it was based on agriculture.

"A tribe is viewed, historically or developmentally, as a social group existing before the development of, or outside of, states. Many people used the term "tribal society" to refer to societies organized largely on the basis of social, especially familial, descent groups (see clan and kinship). A customary tribe in these terms is a face-to-face community, relatively bound by kinship relations, reciprocal exchange, and strong ties to place."

Explanation:

Sorry this looke very big. But shortning it is not bad.  The first 2 para's describe them. Then the 2,4 para's describe development--but it seems many,no need to write all. And then the last is important and for their formation.
