Answer:

When the British gained complete control of India, during this time Marquis of Wellesley (1798-1805) was the British  Governor-General, who was a determined and clever imperialist. Tipu Sultan was his first successful target  and after him he forced Nawab of Awadh to hand him over 30,000 sq miles of land between River Ganga and Yamuna and it put Wellesley into a strong position. In 1803 Lord Lake took  over Delhi  after defeating Marathas leader, Sindhia. Shah Alam was cramped in Red Fort and the British took whole authority in his name. A non interference policy and a treaty of peace was signed by Ranjit Singh in 1809. After 1837, failure and defeat in two Afghan wars, Sindh was taken over in 1843, Punjab in 1849 and, Burma three years later. Wellesley’s brother won two major victories in Deccan.
