According to a graph of the absorption spectrum of chlorophyll a and photosynthesis it does not overlap as chlorophyll a is the major pigment responsible for trapping light but other pigments present in thylakoids also absorb light which includes chlorophyll b, carotenoids and xanthophylls to utilize light of a wider wavelength and protect chlorophyll a from photo-oxidation.
