According to a popular lore, in 1670, a choirmaster in Cologne, Germany had candy sticks made by a local candy maker, to keep children quiet in his church.  Originally, it was white coloured candy sticks, with red stripes and peppermint flavour. The sticks had a crook to their top – like walking sticks, to remind them about the shepherds who visited Jesus Christ.  Later, they also came to be known as Candy Canes.

In due course these came to be associated with Christmas Tide and Saint Nicholas Day.
