Because they cannot oxidise other substances at higher temperatures and are unable to build up the process of reduction.

Usually metallic oxides are reduced by C only at a high temperature. However maintaining this temperature is very difficult and costly, also not eco friendly. Hence electrolysis is preferred method for reduction and extraction of such metals.
