carbon cannot be used as reducing agent to obtain mg from mgo. why ?

(a) Mg has more affinity for oxygen than carbon.

 (b) Electrolytic reduction process of molten NaCl.

At cathode : 2Na+  + 2e-  → 2Na 

At anode : 2Cl- → Cl2 + 2e-  

(c) 2Cu2S + 3O2 → 2Cu2O + 2SO2

Carbon dioxide can behave like an oxidizing agent,where it oxidizes magnesium to form MgO(s):

Mg(s) + 1212CO22 →→ MgO(s) + 1212C(s)
