Carbon has four electron in its valence shell.
Carbon neither can donate it's 4 electron as it takes a tremendous amount of energy nor can take four electrons to compete it's octet to make ionic bond.

Hope you get your answer.

rahul364: full explain please
BigSmoke: As you know that the ionic bonds are formed by donating or accepting a pair of electron. As carbon is not in a position to donate or accept electron pair to complete octet. thus carbon doesn't form ionic bond.
