Importance of bacteria in leather industry is denoted below :
•Dehairing of skins and hides is done by the use of the bacteria.
• Bacillus subtilis , Aspergillus parasiticus, Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus oryzae are either used alone or in mixtures.
• Bacteria is used in the pre-tanning processes ,i.e, soaking, dehairing, bating and degreasing.
•And most important it produces proteolytic enzymes known as proteases which are extracted and used in dehairing, soaking and bating processes which is required to produce leather.

- Bacteria is used in the leather industry for picking and de greasing processes. Although an age old practice which is not used now a days, bacteria was used in the leather industry for a purpose.
- The bacteria of certain species produce enzymes like proteases and fibrinolysins.
- Proteases was useful for digesting certain proteins to some extent which will help in the setting of the leather and make the next step i.e tanning more effective.
- Fibrinolysins was used to break few of the collagen fibres which will make the leather more elastic and firm.
- Also, the bacteria digests most of the fat thereby helping in the decreasing process.
