Carbon dioxide extinguishes work by displacing oxygen, or taking away the oxygen element of the fire triangle. The carbon dioxide is also very cold as it comes out of the extinguisher, so it cools the fuel as well.

As we already know that the oxygen is needed for the fire and we also know that oxygen is lighter than the carbon dioxide so when there is fire somewhere we use the fire extinguisher because oxygen present there goes upwards because of its lightness and carbon dioxide at bottom because its heavier than oxygen and that's why we use carbon dioxide in fire extinguisher
