Carbon forms innumerable compounds as it performs catenation and is tetravalent because of which it is capable of forming long chains branches and even rings.

For more reference:

Catenation: In chemistry, catenation is the bonding of atoms of the same element into a series.

Tetravalency: A carbon atom completes its octet only by sharing its valence electrons with other atoms. As a result, carbon atom forms four covalent bonds by sharing valence electrons with other atoms. This is known as tetravalency of carbon,(tetra means four).

EXPLANATION:

Carbon forms innumerable compounds because carbon is one of the common element of the Long form of Periodic table. We can observe many of the carbon compounds in our everyday life.

Carbon can form innumerable compounds because it can form 4 chemical bonds with same or other elements. This property of carbon is called as tetravalency.

It also has more tendency to form bond with other ‘carbon atoms’ to form long chain compounds. This property of carbon is called as catenation.
