Reaction with NaOH:

RCOOH+NaOH----->RCOONa+H2O

(solid) (soluble

sodium salt)

Carboxylic acids being acidic dissolves in NaOH to form sodium salt.

Reaction of NaHCO3:

RCOOH+NaHCO3---->RCOONa+H2O+CO2^

Forms salt with sodium bicarbonate solution with the evolution of carbon dioxide.

The evolution of carbon ddioxide can detect the presence of carboxylic acid .
