Caste and gender prejudice were common in India, during the 19th and 20th centuries. Customs of inequality and untouchability of earlier years, continued to be followed well into the 20th century.

Those of lower caste were denied entry into homes of the upper castes and places of worship. Education and jobs continued to be the realm of the upper castes. Women found a still backward position in society, with the patriarchal family system.

It was only during the latter half of 20th century, that the situation started changing for the better.
