Caste system in India is one of the world's oldest form of social stratification that is still surviving. Originally the caste depended on the person work but it soon changed into hereditary. The caste system in India has been modified and evolved over the centuries by the rulers and those with power. There wasa significant change in the caste system in India during the Mughal raj and the British rule. Although four primary caste were - - Brahman, kshatriyas , vaishya, and shudra. There are thousand of sub castes and communities within the Indian society.

Independent India has banned any discrimination based on Caste and in an attempt to correct the previous injustice against traditionally disadvantaged, the government has announced quotas in government jobs and education institutions.
