Option 3. Categorization of epithelial tissue is based on Structural modification.
Epithelial cells are categorized based upon morphological features such as shape of cells, the number of the cells and location of those cells. The types of epithelial cells based on structural modification are:
- Simple squamous epithelium: They are thin, flat, and look like a pavement.
- Cuboidal epithelium: As the name suggests they are cuboidal in shape and have a large centrally located nucleus.
- Columnar epithelium: They have more length than width and are shaped like columns.
- Pseudostratified: They are irregularly shaped cells with nuclei at varying positions. However they look stratified at cross sectional angle only and hence the name pseudostratified.
