These rays are the beams of particles moving in a direction opposite to the cathode rays which are the stream of the electrons which move towards the as anode. Goldstein called these rays as canal rays because they produce holes or channels in the cathode.

no, cathode rays are not canal rays..

canal rays are also known as anode rays. these rays are positively charged and are emitted from anode. they move toward the negative electrode of cathode in the discharge tube. it was first discovered by E.Goldstein in 1886.

whereas a cathode ray is beam of negatively charged electrons emitted from the cathode in the discharge tube.
