Some of the major causes of poverty in India includes non-inclusive economic growth, slow agricultural growth, massive population growth, general and food inflation, unemployment and underemployment etc.
Explanation:
- First,non-inclusive economic growth refers to the low growth in per capita income compared to the population growth of the country. It basically indicates higher competition for resources, food, jobs, businesses etc. and contributing to the overall poverty.
- A slowdown in agricultural production especially, in states like Assam,West Bengal,Madhya Pradesh, parts of Uttar Pradesh that are deprived of new and advanced technological inputs in agricultural sector such as in Punjab and Haryana.
- Rapid population growth is also a major attribute of increasing poverty in India. As population is growing rapidly compared to income and employment growth, every economic sector and all the economic resources have become more competitive which affects the poverty level in the country.
- Inflation and food price hike are also contributing to the vicious cycle of poverty in the country.Increase in prices of necessary items and food have caused a major problem or issue for the middle class and low income group people.A price increase of necessities and food and no income hike for the middle and lower income people indicates reduced purchasing power or consumption power for these people contributing to poverty expansion.
- Rapid population growth and increased competition for economic resources have caused a rise in nationwide unemployment. It has definitely hit the middle and lower middle class group who are in most need of some kind of employment.Low level of economic growth and capital formation have slowed down job creation and resource mobility and also contributed to this expansive phase of poverty due to unemployment.
