Causes of the War of Independence. There were many causes of the War of Independence of 1857. They can be divided into political, religious, military, economic and social causes. The East India Company was aiming to annex all the states of India like Avadh, Tanjore, Jhansi, Satara, etc

The reasons were:

The spread of railways created fear among the poor and illiterate sections of the society that they would lose their caste.

The conservative Indians were alarmed by the rapid spread of western education in India.

The British followed a racial discrimination against Indians and advocated a judiciary system based on principle of equality but in actual practice it was biased.
