CCALCULATE THE VALENCY OF SODIUM AND ALUMINIUM

The valency of sodium is 1;

as it has one electron in its outermost(valence) shell, it loses the electron and aquires stable octet configuration.

Similarly, Aluminium has three electrons in its outermost shell, it loses all the 3 electrons to attain stable octet configuration.

Hence its valency is 3

NOTE:

The electrons present in the outermost shell are called Valence electrons.

Valency= valence electrons (if valence electrons are less than or equal to 4)

Valency = 8 - valence electrons (if valence electrons > 4)

Hope it helps!
