Cell is referred to as the basic “unit of life” because it is the most essential and the ‘smallest entity’ that performs the most fundamental functions required for survival.

Cells are equipped with DNA and organelles that perform the cellular functions ranging from replication, transcription, translation, and signalling that are essential for sustaining life. Large number of cells together comprises tissue, make up organs and ultimately a whole organism.

Life is sustained through fundamental functions performed by the microscopic cells, hence they are referred as the basic unit of life.
