Characteristics of plant cells. Plantprimary cell walls are constructed on the outside of the cell membrane and are composed of cellulose and hemicelluloses and pectin. In many cases lignin, suberin or cutin are secreted by the protoplast as secondary wall layers inside the primary cell wall.

Answer:

A British zoologist Theodore Schwann

Explanation:

  • Plant cells differ from animal cells in having a cell wall.
  • The cell wall can be described as a rigid, cellulosic wall surrounding the cell membrane. It is a specialized form of the extracellular matrix that is closely associated with the external surface of the plant cell membrane.
  • This outer coat of plant cells i.e cell wall is much thicker, stronger, and more rigid which provides mechanical support and strength to plants, particularly in higher plants with a vascular system.
  • A German botanist Matthias Schleiden examined a large no. of plant cells that form various tissues in plants.
  • At the same time, a British zoologist named Theodore Schwann (1839) examined different animal cells and revealed that animal cells had a thin outer layer called plasma membrane or cell membrane.
  • Based on his studies on plant cells, Schwann also reported that the presence of cell walls is a unique character of the plant cells.

Hence cell wall unique characteristics of plants were given by Theodore Schwann.
