Cellulose acts as roughage in man but serves as a nutrient in the cow. It is the function of the bacteria to digest cellulose. ... On the other hand, cows have multiple stomachs and hence they allow the bacteria to survive in their stomach. In turn, the bacteria digest the cellulose and provide nutrition to the cows.
