The central idea of the poem "Not marble, Nor the gilded monuments" is that time is sl**tish. It is a bug which eats up the monuments and buildings. The kings and princes build the monuments so that they can be recalled by the future generations , but alas! the ravages of time destroys every monument and buildings thus wipes out the memories of the kings from people's hearts. The only thing that is never destroyed by time is noble works of great persons and thus these great persons are never wiped out from people's hearts.
hope it helps u:)
