ch 1 English reader
Grasshopper Green is a comical chap;
He lives on the best of fare.
Bright little trousers, jacket and cap,
These are his summer wear.
Out in the meadows he loves to go,
Playing away in the sun;
It's hopperty, skipperty, high and low-
Summer's the time for fun.
Grasshopper Green has a quaint little house;
It's under the hedge so bright,
Grandmother Spider, as still as a mouse,
Watches him through his flight.
Gladly he's calling the children, I know,
Out in the beautiful sun;
It's hopperty, skipperty, high and low
Summer's the time of fun.

ABOUT THE ABOVE POEM:-

Grasshopper Green written by George Cooper

  • This poem initially came out in The Nursery- A Monthly Magazine, Volume XVII,1875 published by John L. Shorey, No. 36, Bromfield Street, Boston. It is presently in the public domain.

  • In the poem, the grasshopper is a character of hot summer and the cricket is a character of cold winter. The poet explains that the music of nature or earth is constantly alive whether it is hot summer or cold and bleak winter. During the hot season of summer, all the singing birds are bored and take a rest under the shady branches of trees.

  • A grasshopper holds up on the duty of singing the everlasting song of nature. During summers, he is a fun-loving and pleasing creature with his never-ending pleasures.

  • George Cooper was born in 1840 in New York City. He started writing as a child and, by the age of 16 years, he had started publishing poems in leading magazines. He researched the law and practised for many years, but ultimately agreed to seek a career as a writer. He composed several hymns and much of his work was targeted at youngsters. Stephen Foster put many of George’s lyrics to music and the best known is apparent “Sweet Genevieve.”
