let the total number of frnds be x.
let the shared amt. be y
when there are x friends, share on each friend will be
=> y = 500/x ...........eq. (i)
when two frnds are not there then
=> (y + 12.5) = 500/(x - 2)
=> (y+12.5)(x-2) = 500
=> xy - 2y + 12.5 x - 25 = 500
=> xy - 2y + 12.5 x = 525
putting the value of y frm eq. (i)
=> x(500/x) - 2*(500/x) + 12.5 x = 525
=> 12.5x - 1000/x = 25
=> 12.5 x^2 - 1000 = 25x
=> x^2 - 80 = 2x
=> x^2 - 2x - 80
on solving it
=> x = 10 or -8
since no of frnd can't be negative
so the total number of frnds are 10
