First on advice of Chanakya they directly attacked the capital and at first Mauryan army had upper hand but upon arrival of reinforcements from surroundings they could chase away mauryan army. Then Chanakya was passing by a small house of a peasant there he saw a mother scolding her infant son who was crying of a burn caused because he tried to directly eat a roti from its middle. She was advising her son that don't bee foolish like Chanakya and try to tear open anything from its centre because the centre doesn't cool soon as surroundings heat continuously heat up centre but try the open outer ends as they loose heat quickly.

Then Chanakya tells the Mauryan army the same strategy and they start attacking from the surroundings of the kingdom and it took them considerable time to reach capital and Dethrone Dhananda and captivate him and them kill him.

A2A.

We do not know.

There are a few literary sources but all of them have conflicting stories on how Chandragupta had Dhanananda killed.

Jain and Buddhist texts say that Chandragupta formed an army and began attacking the Nanda Empire. But he was routed and his army was repelled every time. Then, he tried a different strategy. He conquered the territories adjacent to Magadha and posted garrisons there. Then he conquered towns and cities around Pataliputra, encircling the Magadhan capital from all directions. Chandragupta then had a face-off with the Magadhan army and won. He then stormed Pataliputra and forced Dhanananda into exile. There are some versions of the tale where the exiled Dhanananda was later killed by Chanakya’s agents.

Other texts indicate that Dhanananda was killed by subterfuge and deception. This scenario seems unlikely, given the fact that the nobles just wouldn’t just take in kindly to having their king assasinated. But, the argument for this scenario is that the nobles would have acquiesced to the death of a king they all hated. (The fact that Dhanananda was hated is attested by quite a few sources)

The play Mudrarakshasa isn’t of much help here because the events of the play take place a few years after Dhanananda’s death.
