Change in internal energy is independent of path followed? It is true. Why?

Now the change in internal energy can be depicted from the initial and final states, no matter which path has been undergone to do the same. ... Since the potential energy is independent of path, the total energy is also. Any system including non-conservative forces does not have work and hence energy independent of path.
