Question:

Change Question Into Indirect.

Given Questions:

1. He said to them, 'Will you allow me to join the trip?'

2. He said to me , 'Where do you live?'

3. The driver said to me, 'Can I park my car here?'

Answers:

1 → He asked them if he would be allowed to join the trip.

2 → He asked me where I lived.

3 → The driver asked me if he could park his car there.

A Small Explanation:

The above given question asked to change the direct narrations to indirect narrations. Point to be noted that while changing the narrations, we also need to change the tense. The inverted commas are not used while writing in indirect speech. The question mark is removed.

Definitions:

1) Direct Speech.

→ When the exact words of the speaker is used to state or write what he/she has said to us, it is said to be direct speech. Direct speech is always enclosed within single inverted commas.

Examples-

  • He says, 'The sum is difficult.'
  • She has said, 'I exercise everyday.'
  • Sia said, 'I arrived yesterday.'

2) Indirect Speech.

→ When we say or report what someone else has said to us by changing the tenses of finite verbs, personal nouns and adverbs(time and place), it is said to be indirect speech. Usage of inverted commas is never done.

Examples-

  • He said that the sum is very difficult.
  • She has said that she exercises everyday.
  • Sia said that she arrived the day before.
