Explanation:

The original source material, written by Geoffrey of Monmouth in the 12th century, also also had a similar happy ending wherein Cordelia survives and restores Lear to the throne. She then succeeds him upon his death. Shakespeare changed the ending to the dark tragedy we know it to be.
