Question :

Change the narration :-

The children said to me, "We will go out in the rain" .

Answer :

The children told me that they would go out in the rain.

The rules to change a direct speech into an indirect speech are as follows :

  • The comma and the double quotations are omitted.

  • The tense of the sentence inside the quotation does not change if the reported verb is in present tense.

  • The tense of the sentence inside the quotation changes accordingly if the reported verb is in past tense.

  • Here , the reported verb is in simple past tense, therefore the tense of the sentence inside quotation changes from Simple Future tense to Simple Past tense.

  • ' We ' becomes 'They'.

  • 'Will' becomes 'Would'.

  • Direct speech is a sentence in which the exact words spoken are reproduced in speech marks.

  • Indirect speech is a grammatical mechanism for reporting the content of another utterance without directly quoting it.

  • In passive voice, the word 'by' is always used.

  • Hence, the final answer is The children told me that they would go out in the rain.
