“The gate was opened by the peon”. This is the Passive Voice of the given sentence, “the peon opened the gate”.  

In the given sentence, there is only one verb- opened- past tense. So, while changing it into passive voice, opened will be changed into was opened. The ‘subject’ and the ‘object’ of the sentence will be interchanged.  

The peon as the subject in the ‘Active voice’ changes to the object in the passive voice, in the same way, the gate as the object in the active voice changes into the subject in the ‘passive voice’.
