A satellite is a body which continuously revolves on its own around a much larger body in a stable orbit.

 <h3>TYPES OF SATELLITES </h3>

There are 2 types of satellites :

1.  <h4>NATURAL SATELLITE </h4>

A satellite created by nature is called a natural satellite.  \bf{Moon} is a natural satellite of the earth which, in turn, is a satellite of the sun.

2.<h4>ARTIFICIAL SATELLITE </h4>

A man made satellite is called an artificial satellite.  \bf{Russians} were the first to put am artificial satellite, SPUTNIK - 1, in an orbit around the earth.

3. <h4>GEOSTATIONARY  SATELLITE </h4>

A satellite which revolves around the earth in its equatorial plane with the same Angular speed and in the same direction as the earth rotates about its own axis is called a geostationary satellite.

4. <h4>POLAR  SATELLITE </h4>

A satellite that revolves in a polar orbit is called a polar satellite.

Example - European SPOT and the Indian Earth resources satellites ( IERS ).

 <h3>ORBITAL SPEED </h3>

Orbital speed or orbital velocity is the velocity required to put the satellite into it's orbit around the earth.

Expression for orbital velocity :

 <h4>v₀ = R √ g / ( R + h )</h4>

 <h3>TIME PERIOD </h3>

It is the time taken by a satellite to complete one revolution around the earth. It is given by...

 <h4>T = 2 π / R √( R + h )³ / g </h4>

Or T = √ { 3π ( R + h)³ / GρR³

 <h3>TOTAL ENERGY </h3>

For a satellite of mass m moving with a velocity v₀ in an orbit of radius r,

Potential Energy, U = - GMm /r

Kinetic energy, K = ½ mv₀² = ½ m ( GM / r )

Total energy, E = K + U = ½ mv₀² - GMm /r

 <h4>E = - GMm / 2r </h4>

 <h4>E = - K = U /2 </h4>

 <h3>BINDING ENERGY </h3>

The energy required by a satellite to leave its orbit around the earth and escape to infinity is called its binding energy.

The total energy of a satellite is ( - GMm/r ) . In order to escape to infinity, it must be supplied an extra energy to ( + GMm /r ) so that its total energy E becomes equal to zero.

Hence, Binding Energy of a satellite =  <h4>GMm / 2r </h4>
