the glum faced man presents himself as a prisoner. He observes that both miss Fairchild and Mr Easton r feeling uncomfortable. so he comes 2 their rescue. He is sympathetic and helpful.he is kind and had no self interest in saving Mr Easton. To ease the concern of miss Fairchild and remove the embarrassment of Mr Easton, he presents himself as a criminal .This depicts the theme of the story 'appearances can be deceiving'
