Semyon Ivanov was in the war against the Turks. He was crippledwith rheumatism in both arms and legs. When he got back home his four-year old son and father were dead. He lived alone with his wife. Later his wife was called on for the service with a merchant. After that Semyon began to travel a lot because they couldn’t afford to live in thevillage. So he went to find work. One day he was at the train station and saw the stationmaster, who was his old regiment officer. His regiment officer helped him get a job as a trackwalker. Semyon’s wife and hi lived in a hut ten versts away from the station. After two months Semyon decided to meet his neighbor Vasily Stepanych. Vasily complains about his working conditions and getting paid less than Semyon when Vasily has been working there longer. Vasily then says how he has a little piece of land and he tried planting cabbages but nothing grew. Later, Vasily complained to the chief. The chief hit him because he didn’t ask for permission to plant cabbages.
