Basically, covalent bond is a bond formed by mutual sharing of electrons between two non metals.
Its characteristics are:
1. Usually exist in liquid or gaseous state except a few like urea, sugar which are soft solids
2. Contain molecules held together by weak Vanderwaal's forces of attraction
3. Low melting and boiling points
Example - ammonia, chlorine etc..
4. Insoluble in water as it is a polar solvent while covalent compounds are non polar in nature except HCl gas and NH3 as they exhibit properties of ionic compounds when dissolved in water.
Soluble in organic solvents except hydrogen chloride
5. Donot allow electric current to pass through them as they contain molecules
Example - pure water, petrol etc.
Exception - ammonia, hydrogen chloride
6. Undergo ionisation and slow molecular reactions
