Anne's mother, Edith Frank is a highly sentimental and critical woman who is quite careless in the upbringing of her daughters. Anne describes her as sarcastic and hard-hearted and as one incapable of motherly feelings. However, Anne is too judgemental of her mother and her judgments are very harsh. The fact is that Mrs Frank is full of love for her daughters, but she does not know how to express her love towards them and therefore, finds herself quite helpless.

Mrs Frank is no doubt, critical of Anne's behaviour, but then Anne, too, is no less naughty and short-tempered. We find that Mrs Frank fully approves of Margot's behaviour and never has anything to complain against her elder daughter.

Mrs Frank is a religious lady and wants her children to learn the family prayers too. She tries her best to adjust herself to the present circumstances of living in the annexe. She is a lady who has always known the comforts of a warm home. Probably some of her failures are the result of the stress and pain of the situation.

Later, Anne too confesses that she has been a little too critical of her mother and accepts that she is indeed loving, tender and affectionate. She agrees that she has also failed to understand her mother and feels sorry for putting her in difficult situations.
