Antonios charachter is the main role in the play Merchant of venice
he is the wealthy merchant and has a no. of ships which carry his goods all over the world as he himself states that he is very causious merchant who has several business ventures and his fortune does not depend on business risk of single year or on a single ship (the whole play the merchant of venice and the entire plot revolves around him he is the merchant of venice , after whom the play is tittled ).
Yet he appears to be enveloped by a mysterious sense of melancholy . He is not aggressive and his dealings at the same time , very generous he is also a bachelor , which might bring a sense of lonliness in his life . WHen his friend suggests that his malencholy may be due to the fact that his fortunes are at mercy of the ocean or that he is in love , he denies both of them . But before the dialogues could get any further then these two issues of which may be the cause of the malencholy we are made to get introduce other characters and the reason of his malencholy remains enveloped in mystery
Antionio's generosity is highlighted by the fact that he lends his credit standing to Bassanio to go Belmont , inspite of not having any cash at hands .


he is the dearest friend of Bassinio and is willing to take risk for his friend's sake
As we go ahead we come to know that he takes a big gamble in deal with Shylock , showing that he is ready to except challenges . Moving forward Antonio's nobility and genuine concern for his friend Bassenio is portrayed in his willingness to die for his friend . HE expressive the hope that he see bassenio before he die this shows that Antonio is gentle , noble , loving and king . At the end Shylock shows his cruelty and wrath , while on the other hand Antonio has his patience which he tries to counter Shylock moreover his last speech once more reflect his love for Bassenio as he asks him neither to grieve nor repaint. At the end Antonio life is saved by Portia in disguise in the trial scene
and also we came to know getting the letter from Portia informing that his fortune in the ocean is not after all lost

Antonio now gives a surety with his sole;
thus presenting the dept and nature of his friendship with Bassenio
