Antonio is the title character in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. An influential, powerful and wealthy nobleman of Venice, he is a middle-aged man and a merchant by trade who has his financial interests tied up in overseas shipments when the play begins. He is kind, generous, honest and confident, and is loved and revered by all the Christians who know him. His willingness to die for Bassanio is a manifestation of his character. Antonio manifests anti-semitism by cursing and spitting at Shylock (anti-semitism was common in Europe in Shakespeare's days). He is a structural centre of the play.Antonio is an extremely loyal friend to Bassanio and an honorable businessman who does not place unfair fees on loans. • Antonio is shown to be Melancholic which indeed he is not as he explains that he plays the role of sad one. He is a down to earth personality as depicted in the play.

• Antonio is a kind hearted member of the society. He owns prestige, which makes other members jealous of him. He gives loans at low interest thereby increasing his number of customers and reduces the same for others.

• Antonio, is a good friend, he owns his friendship and respect everyone of them as seen in case when Bassanio and Gratiano enters and the way address Salanio at the same moment. He is loyal to Bassanio, even he is a bankrupt, yet Antonio helps him.

• Antonio is good in all respect expect when it comes to respecting other sects, even though he was good enough to others but he called Shylock a cut throat dog, he also spat upon his Jewish clothes and cursed him before everyone.

• Hence Antonio is a generous merchant with a few drawback but he overcome them by implanting self control and not to act before the person who is unwilling to greet.
