Coachman Ali :-
Coachman Ali is the central character of the story. He is unable to bear the pain of separation when his daughterMiriam leaves him after her marriage. he feels lonely and desperately waits for the letter, but in vain. The story 'The letter' shows Coachman Ali in two different characters.

Gokul Bhai :-
Gokul bhai is the postmaster.The post master was an ill-tempered man who cared the least about any other person's life and plight. He was very impatient and emotionless.

Lakshmi das :-
All the employees made fun of Ali but Laxmi Das was a little kind to him. Ali gave him some coins and told him to bring the letter to his grave if he came after Ali's death. And Laxmi Das kept his word by informing the post master about it and then both of them took the letter to the grave.
