He delieves he has fits of giddiness and requires rest.He is parctical and knows of all the places where one can get a drink. He enjoys pretending he can take on all the work.Once he had done so,he makes other work for him just like Uncle Podger. He probably does not enjoy a bath, because Jim says it is worth taking a great deal of food if it can make Harris remain fresh. He enjoys eating and loves to argue. He has a weakness for tombs, but is easily distracted from his purpous by Jim.He is boastful and imagines that he is.The incident of the maze tells us this.He gets angryif people don't do what he wants them to.When Jim distracts him,he gets angry with the absent George and almost falls from the boat in his anger. He can get very angry if he disagrees with the way people behave. He wants to burn riparian landlords for not allowing the general public access to their river fronts.A good meal and a full stomach agree with him and he is almost polite after that.

Harris is probably the funniest character. He loves to rile the others. He refuses to stay at the inn because he does not like look of man he sees there;he prepares to die because he is tired and they cannot find an inn;he is convinced that Jim and George deliberately made him sit at the verge of small gully;he goads George by asking him to agree to put the dead water-rat into the stew;laugh at Jim and teases everyone at the least opportunity. At the end he is the one who has the courage to say that they did well to abort the trip when the weather turned inclement.
