Saki portrays Lady Drakmanton with the shades of different feminine vices and virtues. She comes out as a very money minded, shrewd and calculative person. Her husband, Sir James wants to invite Smithly Dubbs to a luncheon to have a good rapport with them and to ensure votes, but his wife is not too keen with his idea and contrives to have the luncheon at the cost of Smithly Dubbs at Carlton. Her sister who resembles her, also has to be at Carlton with some of her invitees and Lady Drakmanton exploits it to dupe Dubbs.

She, along with Dubbs has a lavish lunch and in the mean time, Lady Drakmanton feigns  complete memory loss, due to which she can't remember who she is. She asserts that the three sisters asked her to lunch with them at Carlton and it was not she who invited them. Later, she tells them she was Ellen Niggle of the Ladies' Brasspolishing Guild and that she had come for polishing at the club. She tells them that Lady Drakmanton is the one who has just entered the room. The realization of  their mistake made the Dubbs sisters uneasy. Leaving hem behind, she parts from them saying she needs to be at polishing job, thanking them for the lunch.
