Leo continues to picture everything that can make us happy with his happiness machine. when he asks his wife what she thinks of it, she is rigid with her answer, but Leo is too excited to realize she does not endorse the project on a quiet evening, He spends more and more time designing the machine against his wife's wishes.

• Leo Auffmann is the The town inventor and is as happy as he is brilliant. On a farcical suggestion from Grandpa Spaulding and Douglas  he decides to make  a Happiness Machine; however he finds that it only joepardies  the real happiness in his life, that is, his family. He is loyal and devoted to his family and could not be any happier than when with his wife and children.
• At the end of the night Leo Auffmann brainstorms on his front porch ideas for a happiness machine. Lena comes out and tells him that the machine is not needed. Leo agrees, but tells her that you have to create stuff for others sometimes. Lena's silence indicates where she stands, but Leo still dreams about the characteristics of the machine which would bring people happiness.
• Leo is becoming more and more interested in what he has developed and neglects his family,  too distracted to notice the discordant strings among his children. His wife tries to get him to see sense and remind him that his children are better off and spend time with them, but the enthusiastic Leo can hardly wait before he unveils the world with the magnificent Happiness Machine so that the populace can never again suffer.
• And when his son uncontrollably weeps after spinning in the Happiness Machine does he stumble. He's lost and can't see where his mistake went. He's talks to Lena and she too tries it out.. At first it hears her chuckle, but from inside the system a deep wrecking cries slowly emerges.
• Finally Leo realises that a Happiness Machine was there with him all along – he was just too absorbed to notice it. One that does not always work, but will do – his family
