Lushkoff was a middle age man. In the initial part of the story, he begs for a living. He is lazy and always tries to find ways to avoid work. He is both physically and mentally weak because of over-consumption of alcohol, especially, Vodka. He is a liar too. He lies very much. Sometimes he says he was a student and other times he says he was a school teacher. He lied because he thought that if he told the truth, noone would help him. Actually he was a singer in a Russian choir and was fired for drunkedness. Later his life was drastically changed because of a generous advocate, Sergei and his cook, Olga. Both of them helped Lushkoff to get on the right track. Olga's scolding and suffering for Lushkoff proved to be life-changing for the poor beggar. Later, Lushkoff stopped drinking and got a job as a notary and was paid 35 rubles a month. Now he was leading a good life and had good clothes to wear. He understood the significance of hardwork and not drinking.
