Lushkoff: Lushkoff is the main character in the story. He is a beggar, with a different style. He does not have integrity of character. He tells different lies, to gain money from people. He is an alcoholic and his clothes are dirty and untidy. Due to the alcohol, his physical and mental health is also poor. But he also possess some positive sides, like his willingness to accept his mistake and change, bear patiently the scolding of Olga and firmness to stop drinking.
Olga: Olga is the lady servant of Sergi. She appears to be cold at heart, but her kindness is revealed in the way she helps Lushkoff. Though she scolds Lushkoff, she has pity on him and helps him. Although she is not physically strong, she is mentally strong which makes her chop the woods for Lushkoff. She is humble and does not brag about it. The truth is revealed, only by Lushkoff later.
Sergi: Sergi is a famous and prosperous advocate. He is a man of high principles. He is strict, straight forward and doesn't accept lies. His keen eyes identify Lushkoff as a liar. He believes in hard work and gives Lushkoff a job. This shows his kindness and helping tendency. He is also happy to know that Lushkoff had reformed.
