Madhav was such a slacker that if he worked for an hour, then he smoked his chilam for an hour. Thus nobody hired them on. If there was even a handful of grain in the house, they both swore off working.

Madhav is the son of Ghisu in the story "The Shroud." His wife Budhia is pregnant and dies while giving birth to their baby. It can be interpreted fro the story that he was much more concerned about his well being than his wife. Even after the death of Budhiya, Madhav and Ghisu were busy conversing about what they deserve in their life and what they have actually gained. Both the father and the son are very lazy. They do not want to work but wants improvement in their lives. Even the money which they collected from the villagers, they decided to get drunk from that money.
